In late 2023, I was a member of the Product Design leadership group at D2L. The company had recently gone public, and had brought on a bunch of new leaders who didn't have a lot of experience working with designers. The product designers on our team were finding themselves undervalued by the rest of the organization, who didn't fully understand the importance of the design process, or how to work with designers.
We wanted to do more outreach. To tell other teams about the value designers bring to software projects. Throughout the 2024 calendar year, I led the work to start an internal blog which would showcase examples of the design process in action, and highlight success stories of how good design led to success in the market.
I configured the site and authored the first few posts to set a playful, casual tone that would be easy to read (and share). Once we had some traffic internally, I engaged with the rest of the design team to get team-level contributions. This involved soliciting ideas for articles, supporting those designers who needed help with the writing process, and staying on top of things to ensure we had a regular publication schedule.
In 2025, I handed ownership of my baby over to a teammate.
